The feminist movement for climate justice in the Caribbean (CMLA), with funding from Global Fund for Women, is seeking an innovative, creative, and seasoned Communications Consultant to develop and execute a communications strategy to advance the brand and visibility of the movement.

About the Movement

The feminist movement for climate justice in the Caribbean is a diverse group of actors from across the Caribbean basin who are working together to advance climate and gender justice. The movement is represented by a committee of nine actors who lead strategy and funding decisions, including a communications subcommittee comprised of two members.

Job Profile

In consultation with the CMLA communications subcommittee, the Communications Consultant, Caribbean Feminist Climate Justice Movement will support the CMLA Advisory Committee with the implementation of a communication and marketing strategy and produce communications and marketing materials with a short turnaround time, high quality, and in close adherence to CMLA’s Advisory Committee’s intersectional feminist ethos and values. The selected consultant will manage the creation of the CMLA’s brand and visual identity.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

  • Strategy and Brand Development
    • In collaboration with movement actors, including the communications subcommittee, develop a basic communications and marketing strategy for increasing movement reach and visibility, including:
      • High-level communications goals:
      • Key messages
      • Target audience(s)
      • Basic execution plan including platforms and media to prioritize
    • With guidance from the CMLA Advisory Committee, develop branding guidelines with associated outputs (fonts, colours, and logos).
  • Strategy Implementation
    • In line with the strategy and branding guidelines developed, execute on the communications vision and goals of the movement by developing tools, systems, and digital profiles. This may include:
      • Media relations: Develop and maintain contact information, materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets (print, TV, radio, web etc.) within and outside represented Caribbean states to increase coverage of identified issues in the media (print, broadcast and digital). Specific activities may include:
        • Draft and edit articles, press releases, and other advocacy/information materials.
        • Collaborate with the media by organizing project site visits, facilitate photo coverage and TV footage and utilizing both web-based and traditional media as appropriate.
        • Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials. Maintain a library of media coverage, clippings etc.
        • Suggestions of likely organizations or actors to cross-collaborate with.
      • Digital communications/social media: Maintain the movement’s presence online including via social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn) through daily monitoring, posting, and content development.
      • Events/campaigns: Assist in organizing and generating public support for special events (including workshops, seminars, and campaign launches) surrounding key issues indicated by the CMLA Advisory Committee.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation
    • Monitor and evaluate the impact of communication materials and advocacy events/campaigns to target audiences.
    • Organize and archive all communications products for easy reference and sharing by movement actors.
    • Produce monthly Communication and Marketing reports and analytics reports to present to the Caribbean MLA Advisory Committee team with:
      • Number of users;
      • Interactivity and Engagement;
      • Conversion;
      • Profiling of our follower basis on location, age, range, work field, gender, and language;
      • A highlight of interesting potential organizations or actors who are following up which our content should reach out to;
      • Propose content creation and news to highlight for the forthcoming month so the Caribbean MLA Advisory Committee team can pull relevant resources accordingly.
    • Host a quarterly review of communications of Caribbean MLA Advisory Committee social and traditional media channels with the Caribbean MLA Advisory Committee team, presenting wins and areas needing improvement.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • At least three years of communications work experience required.
  • Deep understanding of intersectional feminist values.
  • Demonstrated experience and familiarity with gender justice and climate justice preferred.
  • Lived experience in the Caribbean, and ideally based in the region.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimum supervision and guidance from supervisors.
  • Understanding and experience in developing communication and marketing products or written material (as applicable) to appeal to NGO, government, and CSO audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills.
  • Advanced working knowledge of MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Publisher).
  • Demonstrated and extensive social media experience an advantage.
  • Design and layout skills and in using Adobe Photoshop highly desirable.

 

Budget

Not to exceed $10,000, to be broken out among the above deliverables in a SOW.

Location

This is a fully remote role, so applicants may be based anywhere in the world. However, preference will be given to candidates who are based in the Caribbean.

Contract Commitment

This is a part-time role with an expected time commitment of 40 hours per month. We anticipate the contract would begin in May with the first deliverable (strategy and brand development) due by the end of June. The successful candidate would be contracted for an initial period of three months with the possibility of extension.
