Established in 2016, the Documentary Producers Alliance (DPA), a 501(c)3, is an all-volunteer, diverse nonprofit coalition of more than 500 members mainly active in the Americas, UK and Europe, ranging from emerging to Academy Award-winning documentary producers. We set standards for inclusive, sustainable, and equitable business practices based on research, collective experience, and input from strategic partners, amplifying the voice of documentary producers worldwide. We educate the industry about producers’ essential role from development through financing, production, and distribution. Together, we can build a more equitable industry for us all.
The Communications Manager is responsible for driving the organization’s voice and visibility through strategic communications, member engagement, and content development. This role manages social media, produces high-quality written content, and helps to compose and implement creative strategies to strengthen the organization’s impact. Working closely with staff and volunteers, this role is both strategic and hands-on: the contractor will shape creative communications initiatives, oversee implementation, and coordinate with staff and volunteers to advance organizational goals.

- Location: Remote (team primarily based in EST / CST)
- Hours: 15 hours a week
- Compensation: $25/hr
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Elevate the organization’s key initiatives and messaging including:
– Creating posts for social media across existing accounts on existing platforms.
– Design and implement creative communication campaigns that elevate and build upon the organization’s mission
– Draft, edit, and proofread content for our internal, member-exclusive newsletter on a biweekly basis.
– Monitor engagement and track analytics to refine and improve performance.
- Provide communications support for initiatives and long-form public-facing documents.
- Support leadership with media requests and advise members on external
messaging, tone, and best practices to ensure consistent organization-wide
communications. - Execute light website updates, including refreshing the Member Spotlight and other
dynamic user-friendly sections. - Attend monthly/weekly meetings with the Communications team and/or management
Reporting: Communications Chair/Co-Chair. May occasionally present to DPA Leadership.
The ideal candidate should have:
- Proven experience in Communications, ideally with nonprofits
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with an ability to support consistent
organizational tone - Advanced knowledge managing social media platforms for maximum results
- Familiarity with email Mailchimp
- Experience using user-friendly website platforms (WordPress)
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Commitment to uphold the DPA’s mission, vision and values
- Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
- Availability to work 15 hours per week
