galck+, formerly the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya, is the national coalition of LGBTQ+ organisations in Kenya, bringing together over 22 member organisations to advance the rights, dignity, and well-being of LGBTQ+ communities.
POSITION SUMMARY
galck+ is looking for a Communications and Digital Media Assistant Officer (C.D.M.A.O) who will provide direct operational and creative support to the Communications and Digital Media docket in the execution of galck+’s communications strategy. The role is designed for an emerging communications professional who is passionate about LGBTQ+ rights and digital advocacy. The Assistant will support the day-to-day delivery of content, digital media operations, documentation, and internal communications, working closely with the Secretariat, member organisations, and external stakeholders to ensure galck+’s voice remains consistent, compelling, and community-centred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Internal communication management
– Assist in drafting and disseminating internal communications between the Secretariat and member organisations, ensuring timely and accurate information flow.
– Support the preparation of communication materials for internal meetings, convenings, and events.
– Help maintain updated contact databases, distribution lists, and communication records for member organisations, partners, and allies.
– Ensure all internal and external communications produced align with galck+’s Communications and Digital Security Policies.
– Assist in identifying and resolving communication challenges and emerging issues, and
develop escalation protocols for managing communication crises, should they arise. - External communication management
– Assist in producing press releases, audiovisual clips, and photos, newsletters, annual
reports, and education and communication materials that will help amplify galck+’s
work and achievements.
– Support the management of mailing lists, listservs, and newsletter platforms, including subscriber management and distribution.
– Elevate the voice and expertise of influencers and champions by supporting the development and polishing of talking points and opinion pieces, and providing ongoing guidance and support as directed by the CDMO.
– Support in putting systems in place to pre-test the effectiveness of communications campaigns and activities, and preparing spokespersons for interviews or in-person media engagements.
– Assist in coordinating and documenting media and high-visibility events, including agenda creation and speaker liaison. - Digital Media and Online Advocacy
– Under the supervision of the Communication and Digital Media Officer, assist in managing galck+’s website, social media platforms, and newsletters to ensure timely, engaging, and relevant content.
– Assist in creating high-quality multimedia content (written, visual, and audio) to amplify galck+’s work and campaigns.
– Monitor digital trends and online discourse on SOGIE rights, producing regular situation reports.
– Support in tracking all platforms’ analytics and provide reports on campaign performance and engagement impact.
– Encourage and support online participation from members and community voices as part of broader advocacy.
– Support photography, videography, and live social media coverage during galck+ events and convenings.
– Assist in liaising with external media contacts, influencers, and stakeholders under the direction of the Communications and Digital Media Officer. - Documentation and Archiving
– Assist in documenting galck+’s events, meetings, and convenings through written summaries, photography, and audiovisual recording as assigned.
– Assist in maintaining an organised and accessible digital archive of galck+’s multimedia content, publications, and communications assets.
– Compile and submit regular reports on digital platform performance, content reach, and audience engagement metrics.
– Support the preparation of donor communication updates, case studies, and impact narratives related to communications activities. - Advocacy & Institutional Visibility
– Actively support and contribute to galck+’s advocacy agenda, amplifying the organization’s voice and positions in relevant spaces.
– Represent galck+ at relevant sector and task force meetings and keep up to date with the latest developments in the SOGIE Movement
– Attend and document (written/audiovisual) relevant sector and task force meetings and keep up to date with the latest developments in the SOGIE Movement
– Foster institutional visibility by identifying and leveraging opportunities to profile galck+’s work, impact, and values to relevant stakeholders.
– Undertake other duties when requested by the Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education
- A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Public Relations, or
a related field. Equivalent practical experience will be considered.
Experience
- A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in communications, digital media, content
creation, or a related field, either in a professional or volunteer capacity. - Demonstrated experience managing social media platforms (Facebook, X/Twitter,
Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, or similar) for an organisation, campaign, or community. - Experience producing written content and basic graphic or multimedia content for
digital audiences. - Prior experience working with or within civil society, NGOs, LGBTQ+ organisations, or
human rights contexts is an advantage.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in graphic design tools such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or
equivalent. - Basic video editing skills using tools such as CapCut, Adobe Premiere, or similar
platforms. - Competency in managing social media platforms and scheduling tools (e.g. Hootsuite,
Buffer, or Meta Business Suite). - Familiarity with website content management systems, particularly WordPress.
- Basic understanding of email marketing platforms (e.g. Mailchimp or similar).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace tools.
Core Competencies - Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; Kiswahili proficiency is an
added advantage. - Creative thinking with an eye for design, storytelling, and audience engagement.
- Highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks within deadlines.
- Collaborative team player with the ability to work with diverse colleagues and
stakeholders. - Discretion, professionalism, and commitment to confidentiality, particularly in a
sensitive human rights context. - Commitment to the values of galck+ and the broader LGBTQ+ rights movement.
