Deadline: Sunday 13th August 2023,
The ILGA World Conference will take place in Cape Town, 11-15 November 2024.
Conference Theme:
Kwa umoja we rise!
This gathering of ILGA World member organisations and other LGBTI activists and allies provides a great space to connect, learn, collaborate, coordinate, strategise for the future of our global LGBTI movements. LGBTI activists who would otherwise be unable to participate can apply for a scholarship that will cover the costs associated with the conference. Before filling out the form, please read the following information carefully.
This form is only for those who wish to apply for a scholarship. Registration for paying participants will open in January 2024. Please follow our website and social media for details.
Who can apply for a scholarship??
Scholarships are offered to people who would otherwise be unable to attend the conference for financial reasons.
Only LGBTI human rights defenders and activists (including but not limited to representatives of ILGA World member organisations) are eligible to apply for scholarships.
Priority will be given to activists from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Pacific Islands, although a limited number of scholarships will also be allocated to activists from Europe, North America, Australia and Aotearoa / New Zealand.
A full scholarship will cover visa application, processing fees and associated costs, roundtrip flight to Cape Town, shared accommodation in a double-occupancy room, conference registration fees, medical insurance and a small additional daily allowance for incidentals.
Partial scholarships will also be available: if you can partly fund your participation in the 2024 ILGA World Conference, this will allow us to bring more activists to Cape Town. Only a limited number of partial scholarships will be granted.
Even though every attempt will be made to assist as many applicants as possible, we regret to inform that there is a limited quantity of scholarships (both full and partial). If possible, we encourage you to seek alternative funding either within your organisation or from other available funding sources (e.g. Mama Cash, travel grants from local Open Society Foundations, local embassies, etc.).
Selected scholars (scholarship recipients) will be informed by the end of January 2024. Unfortunately, due to limited capacity, unsuccessful applicants will not be notified and if you have not heard from us by the end of January 2024 you should assume that you have not received a scholarship. We encourage unsuccessful applicants to seek alternative funding and/or to register as a paying participant.
Process and Timeline
We recommend filling out this form on a computer (instead of a smartphone) if possible. This will help you upload the reference letter in the mandatory fields.
The scholarship application (this form) is open from 26th of June 2023 till 13th August 2023, 23:59 CEST.
The ILGA World board has designed an evaluation process that considers the diversity of the global LGBTI movement, as well as activists who can bring unique/underrepresented perspectives and benefit the most from the conference.
Successful applicants will be notified by the end of January 2024.
Accessibilty
If you are a person living with a disability(ies) and require further assistance in filling out this form, please contact us at accessibility@ilga.org , and we will work to provide you with an alternative format that is accessible to you, or provide direct assistance.
Selection Criteria
ILGA World are committed to increasing accessibility for LGBTI communities in all their diversity. We give particular attention to diversity of representation of delegates to the ILGA World Conference – whether it is in terms of sexual orientations, gender identities and/or gender expressions, sex characteristics, cultures, religions, linguistic, ethnic origin, race, colour, as well as in terms of age, disability, visual or hearing ability, HIV status, financial means and family composition/responsibilities or other identities.
We particularly welcome applications from activists belonging to groups which are under-represented within the LGBTI movement.
Note that while more than one person may apply from any organisation, ILGA World usually only grants one scholarship per organisation. If two applications from one organisation both reach the final stages of scholarship approval, we will leave it to the organisation to nominate their representative.
ILGA World only grants scholarships to LGBTI human rights defenders and activists. Other types of attendees, such as academics, students, journalists, representatives of corporate entities, medical professionals and representatives from mainstream human rights organisations are encouraged to seek other opportunities to cover their participation. Their applications will NOT be considered.
ILGA World will take reasonable measures to ensure that successful scholars are able to attend the conference. However please note that any scholarship granted will remain conditional due to several factors including but not limited to: ILGA World securing funding for scholarships; the applicant being granted a visa to travel to South Africa;, the availability of flights within reasonable time and cost limits; the ability to secure health travel insurance; existing or future travel bans by governments; force majeure, including natural disasters and the situation of any global pandemics; the reasonableness of existing or future vaccines, hygiene and quarantine restrictions et cetera. Accordingly, a scholarship may be revoked by ILGA World at any time.
