Feminist Book Club is an equal opportunity worker-owned cooperative committed to assembling a diverse, broadly trained team. We are particularly interested in platforming those of varying identities, experiences, and perspectives. Women, trans and gender non-conforming people, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, people with disabilities, veterans, and people from other marginalized communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Our feminism is radically inclusive and intersectional. We believe:
- Black lives matter
- Trans women are women
- Water is life
- Science is real
- Abolition is necessary
- No human is illegal
- Healthcare is a human right
Our online community offers collective learning, author conversations, workshops with scholars and activists, book discussions, mutual support, and joyful nerding out over diverse, challenging, transformative books.
Feminist Book Club (FBC) is looking for a Business Operations Manager with strong leadership capabilities who is also passionate about working cooperatively and collaboratively—and who is excited to help guide an independent feminist media organization into its next chapter.
While FBC started out as a book club, we’ve since become so much more: an independent, worker-owned feminist media organisation and online community committed to support, education, connection, and liberation. Through books, conversations, events, and organizing, we work to dismantle the kyriarchy one page—and one movement—at a time
- Location: Remote
- Compensation: $1,700/month for 15 hours/week
- Structure: Reports to the Board of Directors; works collaboratively with worker-owners and leadership team
Where We’re At
Like many independent media organizations, we’ve weathered a challenging transition. We’re proud of what we’ve built—and we’re also ready to evolve. We’re seeking a Business Operations Manager who can bring fresh energy, strategic thinking, and grounded leadership to help us stabilize, rebuild, and grow into a more sustainable, thriving online community.
This role is ideal for someone who loves both big-picture vision and rolling up their sleeves, and who believes deeply in collective work.
The Role
The Business Operations Manager serves as the primary steward of Feminist Book Club’s operations, strategy, and community health. You’ll work closely with a 7-person Board of Directors, as part of a 4-person leadership team, and with a broader ecosystem of freelance contributors (approximately 20 people total).
What You’ll Do:
Organizational & Financial Stewardship
- Oversee company-wide administrative functions, including payroll, expenses, and bill payment
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop the annual budget, set strategic goals, and track key performance indicators
Team & People Management
- Manage and support a team of editors, contributors, and operational staff
- Facilitate hiring, onboarding, and ongoing support for staff and contributors
- Foster a feminist, trauma-aware, values-aligned workplace culture rooted in clarity, trust, and mutual respect
Community & Events
- Lead business-critical work related to monthly subscriptions, including finalizing themes, creating book polls, and curating offerings
- Develop and co-host virtual events such as monthly chats, author Q&As, workshops, and the annual readathon
- Source and curate additional products and special offerings (sales, special edition boxes, collaborations, etc.)
- Support communication and transparency with worker-owners and co-op members
Growth, Partnerships & Marketing
- Develop relationships with sponsors, publishers, advertisers, and strategic partners
- Secure aligned opportunities that support both mission and sustainability
- Oversee marketing strategy, balancing content promotion, revenue generation, partnerships, and community trust
- When applicable, manage influencer relationships with care and integrity
Who You Are
You don’t need to check every box—but you likely bring many of the following:
- Experience leading or managing an organization, collective, nonprofit, media company, or community-driven business
- Experience with managing a budget, and a passion for financial stability as a foundation of feminist praxis
- Strong operational instincts alongside creative and strategic thinking
- Comfort working in a primarily virtual space with tools such as Slack, Airtable, online communities, etc.
- Comfort navigating periods of transition, repair, and growth
- A deep commitment to intersectional feminism and anti-oppressive practices
- Experience managing teams with empathy, clarity, and accountability
- Joy in building community, not just products
- The ability to hold many threads at once—and to ask for help when needed
Most importantly, you believe that leadership can be human, principled, and collective—and that books and conversations can genuinely change lives.
