Deadline: 20 October 2026 (5 p.m EAT)
Feminists in Kenya (FIK) is a grassroots movement-building feminist organization founded in 2019 that mobilizes women in all their diversities in the pursuit of gender justice. As conveners of the #TotalShutDownKE nationwide marches against femicide, we remain committed to ending violence against women, sexual and gender minorities, and other structurally silenced groups. Our 2026–2031 strategy, Otherwise, Life? is our vision for building feminist power and imagining different possibilities for our collective futures. It centers feminist leadership, narrative power and digital cultures, bodily autonomy and resistance to violence, movement building and collective power, and care infrastructures that sustain our communities and movements. Grounded in African feminist traditions of Community, Joy, and Resistance, our work turns everyday silences into feminist language and collective action.
FIK is a small, creative and growing team, excited about building thriving feminist futures for all of us. We value people who bring ideas, take initiative, collaborate generously and are willing to experiment. As we grow, we are looking for people who want to help shape not only our work, but how we work, bringing creativity, political imagination and a commitment to building a strong, joyful and effective feminist organization.
About the Role
The Program Assistant will play a key role in implementing FIK’s 2026-2030 strategic plan, Otherwise, Life, and strengthening the delivery of our program areas. Supervised by an assigned Feminist Programs Lead, the Assistant will support the planning, coordination, and timely completion of feminist programs, initiatives, campaigns, learning spaces, community activities, and convenings.
The role requires someone who is highly organised, proactive, and able to move ideas from planning to action. The Assistant will help ensure that activities are delivered on time, to a high standard, and with strong attention to detail, while maintaining clear documentation, follow-up, communication, and participant care.
Assignments will span relevant areas of FIK’s five strategic priorities, providing an opportunity to contribute directly to feminist movement-building, strengthen our programs, and support the effective implementation of Otherwise, Life.
- Position: Feminist Program Assistant
- Location: Nairobi, Kenya (hybrid, with occasional travel). Open to applicants legally eligible to work in Kenya.
- Reporting to: Feminist Programs Lead
- Duration: Full-time (40 hours per week)
- Contract type: One-year renewable contract (three-month probation)
Key Responsibilities
Program Planning, Coordination and Delivery
- Support the implementation of FIK’s strategic plan, Otherwise, Life, by translating approved program priorities into well-planned, coordinated, and timely activities.
- Support the Feminist Programs Lead to develop and maintain detailed work plans, activity plans, timelines, deliverables, and implementation trackers for assigned program areas.
- Take responsibility for the day-to-day implementation of assigned activities, ensuring that agreed outputs, timelines, participant commitments, and quality standards are met.
- Coordinate the delivery of feminist programs, including learning spaces, community initiatives, campaigns, trainings, convenings, festivals, research activities, and movement-building activities.
- Coordinate all practical requirements for activities, including participants, facilitators, venues, travel, accessibility, materials, communications, procurement, and other logistical needs.
- Track implementation against agreed plans and proactively follow up with relevant team members, partners, and service providers to ensure activities remain on schedule.
- Identify implementation challenges, resource gaps, dependencies, and risks early and escalate them to the Feminist Programs Lead with practical recommendations.
- Support adjustments to program plans where circumstances change, ensuring that adaptations are documented and aligned with FIK’s priorities and approved budgets.
- Ensure activities are implemented in accordance with FIK’s program standards, safeguarding requirements, financial procedures, and other organisational policies.
Program Area Strengthening and Development
- Contribute substantively to the strengthening and development of FIK’s program areas by bringing ideas, research, community insights, and emerging feminist issues into program implementation.
- Support the Feminist Programs Lead to identify opportunities for new activities, partnerships, learning spaces, and approaches that advance FIK’s strategic priorities.
- Help develop program concepts, activity plans, session plans, briefs, concept notes, agendas, and other materials required for effective implementation.
- Support the testing and refinement of approaches, tools, and activities based on participant feedback, program learning, and changing community needs.
- Contribute to cross-program collaboration and identify opportunities to connect activities across FIK’s strategic priorities rather than working on programs in isolation.
- Maintain a clear understanding of the objectives, intended outcomes, target communities, and commitments of assigned programs and use this understanding to guide implementation.
Program Documentation, Knowledge Management and Records
- Maintain complete, accurate, and up-to-date records for assigned programs from planning through implementation, reporting, and close-out.
- Establish and maintain organised digital and physical project files, ensuring that key program documents are consistently stored and easy to retrieve.
- Maintain current records of workplans, budgets, activity plans, participant lists, attendance, consent documentation, partner information, contracts, deliverables, reports, correspondence, outputs, photographs, feedback, and other relevant project materials.
- Ensure program records are updated promptly following activities and that outstanding documentation is followed up and completed.
- Maintain a clear record of program milestones, outputs, deliverables, commitments, and deadlines.
- Support the systematic capture of program learning, participant feedback, stories, outcomes, challenges, adaptations, and lessons.
- Ensure that documentation accurately reflects what took place and does not overstate impact, results, or participant experiences.
- Support the Feminist Programs Lead to maintain a complete evidence base for internal learning, organisational reporting, donor reporting, audits, evaluations, and future program development.
Community, Partner and Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and maintain respectful working relationships with grassroots organisations, feminist groups, community leaders, facilitators, participants, consultants, and other program partners.
- Support meaningful engagement with communities throughout the program cycle, including outreach, mobilisation, onboarding, implementation, follow-up, and feedback.
- Ensure that community and partner commitments are clearly communicated, documented, and followed through.
- Support participatory approaches that recognise communities and participants as knowledge holders, organisers, and leaders rather than simply “beneficiaries” of FIK’s work.
- Coordinate partner and participant communication and ensure timely responses, follow-ups, confirmations, and sharing of relevant information.
- Support the Feminist Programs Lead in maintaining productive partnerships and flag any emerging relationship, delivery, or accountability concerns.
- Ensure participant engagement is conducted with care, respect, confidentiality, informed consent, and appropriate safeguarding practices.
- Coordinate approved participant support, referrals, accessibility requirements, and care-related logistics within FIK’s established procedures.
Communications, Narrative and Knowledge Sharing
- Provide timely and accurate program updates, information, stories, data, and materials to the Narrative and Communications team.
- Support the documentation of program activities and outcomes in ways that contribute to FIK’s broader feminist narrative and movement-building work.
- Ensure that participant stories, photographs, quotations, names, and other identifying information are shared only where appropriate consent has been obtained.
- Work with the Narrative and Communications Officer to ensure program information is factually accurate and appropriately contextualised before publication.
- Contribute program insights and emerging issues that can inform FIK’s public education, campaigns, storytelling, and narrative work.
Team Collaboration, Accountability and Professional Practice
- Work closely with the Feminist Programs Lead and relevant members of the FIK team to ensure that program implementation is coordinated across functions.
- Take ownership of assigned work, communicate progress consistently, and follow through on agreed responsibilities without requiring consistent supervision.
- Attend and actively contribute to program planning, team meetings, reviews, and organisational learning processes.
- Maintain clear communication when timelines, responsibilities, or deliverables are at risk and seek support early where necessary.
- Respect the scope of the role while taking initiative to solve problems and strengthen implementation.
- Uphold FIK’s feminist values and organisational policies, including safeguarding, confidentiality, financial management, data protection, and workplace policies.
- Contribute to a team culture grounded in accountability, care, collaboration, learning, and respect.
Qualifications & Experience (Required)
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, including Development Studies, Gender Studies, Gender and Development, Social Sciences, International Development, Community Development, Law, Sociology, Political Science, Project Management, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
- 1–3 years of relevant experience in community programs, project coordination, feminist organising, movement building, events, training support, research, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience supporting the planning, coordination, and implementation of projects or activities, including managing timelines, logistics, follow-up, and multiple tasks simultaneously.
