The position
ILGA World has the honour of hosting the Secretariat of the Equal Rights Coalition (ERC).
ILGA World is seeking a staff person to manage the ERC Secretariat for an initial period of one year with a possible extension after the initial year. The ERC Secretariat manager is accountable to the ERC Executive Committee and is supervised by the Executive Director of ILGA World.
The Secretariat’s role is to provide support on an ongoing basis to the ERC, all ERC groups and processes, providing an important link between all parties coming together in the ERC and ensuring good governance, communications and institutionalisation, and continuity of the Coalition.
The Secretariat is an administrative independent body, guided in its work by the State and the civil society co-chairs, accountable to the ERC Executive Committee, and hosted by ILGA World. Its role is to support and facilitate interaction among state parties, other affiliated international and regional bodies, and civil society engagement in the ERC.
The ERC Secretariat is meant to serve member states, other affiliated international and regional bodies and global civil society equally, all that are part of the Coalition. For this reason, it has to maintain administrative independence as the co-chairs guide its work.

Responsibilities
- Ensure the operations of the Secretariat in accordance with its mandate and responsibilities, and ensuring its good governance
- Oversee and/or implement the functions of the ERC Secretariat such as:
- Support the Executive Committee in preparing the ERC’s annual work plan and calendar
- Support the recruitment and manage the other ERC Secretariat staff
- Support the Thematic Groups in developing and implementing their work plans
- Establish mechanisms for evaluating the progress and achievement of the ERC’s objectives
- Prepare the draft annual management report for approval by the Executive Committee
- Promote the participation of states, international organisations, and civil society in the ERC
- Assist in and facilitate the organisation of meetings of the ERC’s governing bodies, including providing interpretation services
- Prepare, maintain, and preserve the minutes of all ERC meetings in English and Spanish
- Ensure the translation of all ERC documents
- Provide technical support for online meetings via Zoom or other platforms
- Support the Co-Chairs of the Thematic Groups and assist in the election of new Co-Chairs for the Thematic Groups
- Serve as a bridge and provide guidance during the transition between new and existing co-chairs, both for the ERC Co-chairs and the Co-chairs of the Thematic Groups
- To develop documentation and guidance processes for new member states and new CSOs joining the ERC
- To assist in the drafting of ERC communications
- To implement the process for approving official ERC communications
- To maintain the ERC website, in collaboration with the Communications Committee
- To send communications to ERC members, using ERC technical resources
- To maintain mailing lists for each ERC body
- To develop and maintain the membership lists of all ERC groups
- To maintain ERC documents, including the minutes archive, and to prepare periodic compliance reports
- Support internal and external communication strategies, in coordination with the Co-Presidency and the Communications Committee.
- Provide logistical support for attending ERC events for the ERC Co-Presidencies and the Co-Presidencies of the Thematic Groups, when resources are available
- Advise on the development and organization of ERC events
- Coordinate a transparent process for selecting delegates to ERC events.
- Manage the Secretariat’s budget, preparing annual reports for approval by the Coordination Committee
- Serve as a communication bridge between the Co-Presidency, the Executive Committee, and the Thematic Groups, ensuring consistency in information
- Be an independent body that reports to the ERC Executive Committee and the Coordination Committee and is guided in its work by the ERC Co-Presidencies
- Report its assessment of compliance with ERC rules to the Co-Presidency and the Executive Committee.
Requirements
The successful candidate should be strongly committed to working for human rights and equality. The candidate should have at least 10 years of relevant experience, and have competencies and demonstrated experience in the following areas:
- Organisational capacity: Demonstrate the ability to embed a Secretariat function independently
- Collaboration and prioritisation: Experience working in collaboration with different stakeholders and prioritising work based on pressing needs
- Significant achievements on LGBTI rights advocacy: Effective, relevant and proven experience in achieving social and legislative advances for LGBTI people, at the regional, state or international level
- Language proficiency: Professional working proficiency in English and Spanish (minimum C1 level in both languages), with the ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken contexts.
Highly desired abilities
These abilities would be considered a strong asset for the job:
- Project management: Proven ability to effectively manage projects, ensuring timely delivery and meeting objectives
- Financial management: Proficient in receiving and disbursing funds from foundations and governments
- Transparent financial accountability: Ability to ensure transparent financial accountability for any funds received
- Global partnership experience: Experience of successfully working in global partnerships and experience in managing similar organisational set-ups
- Strong IT and technical abilities: Advanced knowledge and use of computer tools, including office software (or equivalent), social networks, and mailing lists
Desired abilities
The successful candidate ideally has
- At least 5 years of experience in successfully supervising staff, preferably in remote working settings
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and inclusive environment
- Strong organisational and project management skills
- Familiarity with international policies related to human rights and equality
- Experience on advocacy in evidence and data
- Actual and direct knowledge of the ERC.
Performance of duties, remuneration and benefits
- ILGA World is currently operating under remote working conditions via employer of record model. We do not offer relocation to our headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland
- The position is advertised as a full-time position
- ILGA World remunerates under a salary matrix structure. The annual salary being offered for the post ranges is according to ILGA Worlds senior specialist scale and ranges between CHF 62.440 and CHF 89.200 for a full-time position, depending on location
- ILGA World operates under a flexible working system, that among others includes flexible working hours
- The office operates on a nine workdays schedule within two weeks
- The standard weekly working time is 41 hours on a 100% position.
