APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR ADVOCACY WEEK 2019. APPLY NOW!

Application Deadline: 8th July, 2019.
OutRight is pleased to announce the opening of our Advocacy Week applications process for 2019.

Every December, OutRight Action International hosts LGBTIQ activists from around the world in New York for a week of high-level meetings and activities at the Headquarters of the United Nations.

The aim of Advocacy Week is three-fold:

Facilitate the use of the New York based UN system by LGBTIQ activists, with a view to enhancing their networks and identifying new entry points for progressing recognition of the human rights of LGBTIQ people at home.
Bring together LGBTIQ activists from around the globe and create safe spaces for networking, and the exchange of information and experiences.
Build the capacity and knowledge of New York-based UN and State representatives about the situations and human rights of LGBTIQ people around the world.
Advocacy Week 2019 will kick off with two days of training during which activists will brainstorm how to effectively use the spaces being created during the week. Throughout the rest of the week, OutRight sets up strategic meetings with diplomatic missions, governments, and individuals, as well as organizing events at the United Nations for activists to take part in and make use of. There will also be opportunities for activists to meet key donors and media during their stay in New York.

This year, Advocacy Week will be held from December 4 to 13.

If you are an LGBTIQ activist and feel you and your organization will benefit from taking part in OutRight’s Advocacy Week, please fill out the questionnaire. Your answers will inform the selection process, and assist us in the development of a relevant engagement strategy, based on a real-time assessment of the needs of activists on the ground.

OutRight Action International supports expansive equal opportunity:

In particular, intersex, trans, gender nonconforming, lesbian, and bisexual women and people including those in or from the global south are encouraged to apply.

Application deadline is July 8.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is it required that I be affiliated with an organization?

This year, we ask that applicants are members of and/or are affiliated with local, regional and/or international LGBTIQ organizations and/or organizations working on securing human rights for LGBTIQ people. Our programming provides training for and access to United Nations governing bodies, missions and multilateral agencies with a goal of identifying new entry points and enhancing advocacy networks for LGBTIQ organizations and their allies. The strongest applicants will be those who have some experience in advocacy strategies working with national governments, regional and/or international bodies and who make a strong case why and how they want to expand their work in this by using the UN system, country missions and agencies based in New York.

If I applied to Advocacy Week last year, can I apply this year?

Yes.

How do I know my application has been submitted?

Once you click “Done” at the bottom of the form, your response has been submitted. We suggest you save your responses for your reference, as you will not get a copy from the Survey Monkey form.

How will I know I have been selected?

Applicant selection process occurs from July 9 – September 3. All applicants will be notified of their status by September 3.

What happens if I’m selected but can’t get a visa?

OutRight will do everything we can to support your visa application, but ultimately, if you are denied a visa to visit the United States, we cannot guarantee your attendance.
